MAGAZINE AND DIGITAL NEWS
OF THE DIOCESE OF TRENTON
serving the Catholic community in
Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
THE MONITOR MAGAZINE has always been built on current news out of our local parishes and schools, and well beyond. The SEPTEMBER ISSUE does not depart from that customary approach. But often, much of the content we publish is also forward-thinking, seeking to address problems we face now in order to build brighter futures for our children, grandchildren, and generations of children around the world to come.
This month’s cover – showing climate-driven emergencies that have affected so many different parts of the world -- is a powerful example. We all need to know these tragedies are happening in real time for a myriad of reasons. But it is important to recognize that these concerns have prompted Pope Francis and other Church leaders, including our own Bishop David O’Connell, to urge us all to “care for our common home.” As we enter the Season of Creation, we bring you key messages and local stories where good things are happening to preserve and protect the environment.
It is the effort to preserve a future for those who face mental health crises that prompts Bishop O’Connell to take on the very difficult topic of suicide and present the pastoral heart of the Church toward all who suffer. We hope that you will not only read it but also share it with everyone you love.
Our annual Back to the Classroom section is yet another reminder that Passing on the Faith and equipping our children with a love for Jesus Christ are among the most fundamental responsibilities that we have as parents, catechists, educators and faith leaders. You will find messages from the Bishop, the Superintendent of Schools and the Director of Catechetical Ministry, and meet some new faces in our parishes and schools.
These are dynamic times, burdened with tragedy and heartbreak, but also filled with opportunities to impact our world and the human family in positive ways. We hope you are able to discern your own role in the priorities that our faith leaders have set forth to build a brighter future in God’s name.
