What is a Holy Year?
On December 24, 2024, Pope Francis will open the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome starting the Jubilee Year 2025. Then, on December 29, 2024, all diocesan bishops will celebrate Mass in every cathedral to officially begin the Jubilee. The theme for this Holy Year is "Pilgrims of Hope."
A Holy Year, or Jubilee, is a special time in the Catholic Church that happens every 25 years. It’s a year for forgiving sins, making peace with others, and getting closer to God. During this time, we focus on forgiveness, reconciliation, and joyfully serving God and each other.
Even though we should always try to live these values, a Holy Year is a special time to focus on them more intensely. It is a special year of grace. During this year, we should focus more deeply on God’s loving mercy and forgiveness.
Pope Francis encourages us during this Jubilee to be sources of hope for others, especially those going through tough times.
