Physical Education
Introduction
“Life and physical health are precious gifts entrusted to us by God. We must take reasonable care of them, taking into account the needs of others and the common good” (Catechism of the Catholic Church # 2288)
These guidelines were designed by a representative from each of the five dioceses in the state of New Jersey. They are based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, concepts of the Catholic Church and Diocese of Trenton Curriculum Standards.
The diocese expects that every elementary school provide a health program as a part of the Physical Education department. In order to accomplish this it is critical that the health teacher understand the Catholic faith and concepts. When this is not possible then another teacher should be chosen who can integrate Catholic and wellness concepts into the teaching and learning process.
The guidelines are divided into three standards 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 including the following division of factors: personal health, growth and development, nutrition, diseases and health conditions, safety and social and emotional health. These factors should be integrated with the concepts found in the Physical Education Curriculum and the Religion guidelines.
These factors stress the importance of building a foundation of wellness for each student that will be implemented into adulthood.
Mission
The Mission of the Health Curriculum Guidelines is to prepare the students to embrace wellness as a way of life through proper care and respect of the life God entrusted to them.
