Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. is calling upon the diocesan faithful to remember in prayer consecrated persons as the universal Church observes World Day for Consecrated Life Feb. 2.
Faithful from throughout the Diocese of Trenton and beyond gathered Jan. 25 and 26 to bid farewell to Bishop Emeritus John M. Smith in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. Bishop Smith, 83, passed away after a long illness in Morris Hall Meadows, Lawrenceveille, the morning of Jan. 22.
Historically, religious orders developed in the Church, first because of some particular need that was not able to be met in the Church at the time and, second, because the vision and charism of some particular individuals were able to inspire others to come together and determine how to meet that need. And, so, religious orders, communities, congregations and societies were born!
WASHINGTON – The Catholic Church will hold its annual celebration of the World Day for Consecrated Life on February 2, 2019. This celebration is a special time for individual parishes and the greater Church to celebrate the beauty of the consecrated vocation, highlight its various forms, and reflect on the unique Christ-centered witness that consecrated men and women bring to the Church and the surrounding community.
Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Trenton will join with others nationwide to celebrate National Catholic Schools Week (CWS), Jan. 27 to Feb. 2 with open houses, exhibits, prayer services, showcases, Mass and a variety of other exciting activities for students, families, parishioners and community members.
It is my sad duty to announce the death on Jan. 22, 2019 of the Most Rev. John Mortimer Smith, Bishop Emeritus (2010-2019) and Ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton (1997-2010), former Coadjutor Bishop of Trenton (1995-1997), former Bishop of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee in Florida (1991-1995) and former Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark (1988-1991).

This past year, five of our Catholic schools in the Diocese of Trenton were awarded the coveted National Blue Ribbon School recognition by the United States Department of Education. That is an amazing accomplishment and a source of pride not only for the individual schools themselves – administrators, faculty, staff, volunteers, parish priests, students and families – but for all of us committed to Catholic education. Our Catholic schools have been regularly among those singled out for this recognition but to have five in one academic year is truly awesome!
The Diocese of Trenton will be live-streaming multiple pro-life events that have been scheduled for the next several days locally and in Washington D.C.
The Monitor has released its annual Year in Review, the annual pull-out section that takes a look back at 2018, with a full round-up of the busy year that was in the Diocese, as well as reporting on some of the biggest national and international stories from last year.
The Roman Catholic Bishops of New Jersey announced today their decision to retain Kenneth R. Feinberg and Camille Biros to design, implement and administer a statewide Victims Compensation Program for the submission, evaluation, and settlement of individual claims of sexual abuse of a minor. The Program would operate independently from any of the participating dioceses. The Administrators of the Program will have complete autonomy to determine eligibility of individual claims and the amount of compensation for victims who present a claim. This Program is intended to compensate eligible victims of child sexual abuse including those whose financial claims are legally barred by New Jersey's statute of limitations.
Faithful of the Diocese of Trenton will have the opportunity to stand for the sanctity of life alongside hundreds of thousands from around the world during the Jan. 18 March For Life in Washington, D.C.
I have said it before and I say it again. There is one thing we all have in common, my brothers and sisters. Regardless of our race or place of natural origin; regardless of our religion or absence of it; regardless of our age or status or station in life: God gave us the gift of life which our mothers carried until the day of our birth. We were allowed to live!
