Calls have gone out for teens who want to showcase their talents during the diocesan sponsored YOUTH TALENT SHOW, set for Oct. 14 in St. Mary Church, Manahawkin. The showcase is part of the Year of Youth Fest, a day-long event that will include food, games, and Mass with Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. The Youth Fest will formally kick off the Year of Youth in the Diocese of Trenton, which runs from July 1, 2018 to June 21, 2019.
The Greek philosopher Aristotle once wrote, “Good habits formed at youth make all the difference.” Ancient wisdom, eternal truth! I like to think that truth applies to the lives of young saints. It is certainly true of the life of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, who was born and lived at the beginning of the 20th century. Rather than telling his story from birth, I’d like to start with his death.
“Back to school! You see the signs everywhere reminding us that it’s that time again!” said Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. in a message inside the annual Back to School special edition inside the Aug. 23 issue of The Monitor.
As Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, I wish to share with all the clergy, religious and faithful of the Diocese a letter from His Holiness Pope Francis addressed to the People of God responding to the sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable adults by clergy and consecrated persons as well as its cover-up by bishops and others in authority in the Church.
“If one member suffers, all suffer together with it” (1 Cor 12:26). These words of Saint Paul forcefully echo in my heart as I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse, the abuse of power and the abuse of conscience perpetrated by a significant number of clerics and consecrated persons. Crimes that inflict deep wounds of pain and powerlessness, primarily among the victims, but also in their family members and in the larger community of believers and nonbelievers alike. Looking back to the past, no effort to beg pardon and to seek to repair the harm done will ever be sufficient. Looking ahead to the future, no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated. The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain, and so it is urgent that we once more reaffirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and of vulnerable adults.

In upcoming events for the Diocese of Trenton, the department of pastoral care is to explore the role of the parish in drug addiction recovery and Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. joins a Diocesan pilgrimage to Mexico City in December.
The Holy Father Pope Francis has approved the following revision to the Catechism of the Catholic Church recommended by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (August 1, 2018). It reflects the gradual development of the Church’s teaching that the death penalty is “inadmissible” and should be abolished.
