After five years of educational and pastoral formation, eight laymen will advance to the Order of Deacon in service to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton May 15 when they are ordained by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton.
The Mass of Ordination will begin at 10 a.m. and will be livestreamed on all diocesan media outlets, including YouTube.com/trentondiocese. In-person attendance is by invitation only.
The men, who hail from Burlington, Mercer and Monmouth Counties, will serve their parish communities as permanent deacons. All of the men are married with families and have served as lay ministers for many years in their parishes in such roles as lectors, catechists, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and in youth and Hispanic ministries.
The Order of Deacon has its roots in the ancient Church with St. Stephen, thought to be the first deacon. It gradually disappeared over the first millennium in the Latin Rite Church but was restored following the revelations of the Second Vatican Council. The word “deacon” means simply, “servant”, and defines this unique ministry of service in liturgy, word and charity. The permanent deacon’s ministry is distinct from that of transitional deacons, who are seminarians entering their final year of formation before their ordination as priests.
Deacons are called to proclaim the Gospel at Mass and preach. They are able to officiate at weddings and Baptism, and they can preside at Communion services, wakes and funerals and certain other ceremonies and observances in the Church.
“Deacons are part of the clergy and live their vocation in and with their family,” Pope Francis said in 2020. “They are the guardians of service in the Church. Let us pray that deacons, faithful in their service to the world and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church.”
