Solidarity, justice concerns spur Pope, bishops to call for prayer in early September

September 2, 2020Church leaders have called upon the faithful to remember in prayer several crises that continue to bring suffering to individuals and nations. The Diocese of Trenton echoes this call and encourages its community to pray the Rosary in support of the need for solidarity and racial justice and in response to Bishop David M. O’Connell’s Aug. 17 invitation to his flock to pray the Rosary with him daily for the needs of the nation.
Pope calls for a Day of Prayer Sept. 4 in solidarity with people of Lebanon – One month after a massive explosion at a fertilizer storage facility tore through Beirut and reopened Lebanon’s old wounds, Pope Francis expresses his and the Church’s solidarity with the troubled nation and calls for a Worldwide Day of Prayer Sept. 4.
USCCB calls for a Day of Prayer and Fasting Sept. 9 – In the wake of violence in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and in other cities across the nation, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops urges all people of faith to observe the Memorial Feast of St. Peter Claver Sept. 9 as a Day of Fasting (where possible) and Prayer. We urge Catholics to consider attending the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and offer their participation in reparation for sins of racism to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and for the intercession of the saints who have fought for racial equality such as St. Katharine Drexel and St. Peter Claver.
In his message about the Rosary, Bishop O’Connell wrote:
I invite all Catholics in the Diocese of Trenton to consider making this powerful devotion part of your daily life of prayer. Please join with me in praying Our Lady’s Rosary every day between now and October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, for the many intentions and needs of our nation today.
