‘The single most critical factor in an effective parish catechetical program is the leadership of a professionally trained parish catechetical leader.’ (NDC 54).
The Parish Catechetical Leader (PCL) works in in collaboration with the Pastor to develop and administrate the Religious Education Program for families with elementary aged children (ages 6-14) in the parish community. Depending on the scope of responsibly and education the position is titled, Director/Coordinator/Administrator of Religious Education.
The Diocese of Trenton is continually seeking potential parish catechetical leaders. Training is provided for those interetsed. To be considered a Director, a PCL will have an advanced degree in theology from a Catholic University or College. For information on the training for a PCL, click here and for scholarships to assist with advanced degrees, click here.
PCLs in the Diocese of Trenton are supported by T.R.E.D. (Trenton Religious Education Directors). This organization is to support PCLs in their ministry. Meetings are held in the four counties (Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean), the clusters in each county meet at least 4 times per year.
