OP O'CONNELL'S MESSAGE FOR THE WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE CARE OF CREATION:
I always feel grateful to live in a section of the country that enjoys a clear and distinct change of seasons and their accompanying weather patterns. In more recent years, however, those seasonal weather patterns seem to overlap and blend a bit more than in he past. I am not a meteorologist or scientist, but I am sure there are “scientific” reasons for such evidence of “climate change.” And I am also sure that there are many people who will either agree or disagree with those reasons, as well as those who simply do not care.
The expression “climate change” is often used interchangeably with “global warming” but the two terms, though somewhat related, each have a distinct meaning.

AS BISHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF TRENTON, I OFFER MY HEARTFELT THANKS, on behalf of the retired, elderly and infirm priests of the Diocese, to the pastors and parishes who conducted the first annual collection for the newly established “Retired, Elderly and Infirm Priest Fund” on the weekend of July 23-24, 2022, “Grandparents and Elderly Weekend.”
Although some of our priests choose to live in their own retirement residences, this annual collection will help the Diocese begin to establish additional suitable and dignified residences for retired and elderly diocesan priests as their number increases. Plans are currently underway to restore St. Denis Convent in Manasquan for that purpose. Other, additional sites are also being considered as well, given the increasing future need. Such efforts are incredibly expensive, and I am so grateful for the tremendous generosity of the faithful of our Diocese. You never let me down.

. O’CONNELL, C.M., HAS SHARED THIS MESSAGE ON THE BEATIFICATION OF POPE JOHN PAUL I BY POPE FRANCIS, SEPTEMBER 4.
Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., has shared this message on the beatification of Pope John Paul I by Pope Francis, September 4.
Pope John Paul I (Albino Luciani), who reigned for only 33 days (August 26-September 28, 1978), will be beatified at Mass celebrated by Pope Francis on September 4, 2022 at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Universally known as “the Smiling Pope,” Pope John Paul I was recognised throughout his life as a humble, holy, charitable and pastoral priest who easily won the hearts of people. He also demonstrated great literary skills as an author and effective catechist. His brief papacy and sudden death at age 65 stunned the world.
On the day following his election, Pope John Paul I spoke this message to the world:
A dawn of hope spreads over the earth, although it is sometimes touched by sinister merchants of hatred, bloodshed, and war with a darkness which sometimes threatens to obscure the dawn. This humble Vicar of Christ, who begins his mission in fear yet in complete trust, places himself at the disposal of the entire Church and all civil society. We make no distinction as to race or ideology but seek to secure for the world the dawn of a more serene and joyful day. Only Christ could cause this dawn of a light which will never set, because he is the “sun of justice” (cf. Mal. 4:2). He will indeed oversee the work of all. He will not fail us.
