It has been 20 years since the Diocese of Trenton hosted its first annual gathering to honor and pray for men and women in law enforcement who reside or serve in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth or Ocean Counties. Over the last two decades, tens of thousands of law enforcement personnel have traveled to St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Trenton for what is popularly known as the Blue Mass. The event has traditionally been celebrated by the diocesan bishop and scores of priests, followed by a luncheon and opportunity for conversation and camaraderie.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton invites men and women of all faiths to attend the 20
th annual Blue Mass set for 10:30 a.m., April 30 in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Trenton. Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., will serve as principal celebrant and homilist for the Mass, and will ask God’s protection for law enforcement personnel in the four counties of the Diocese and around the state. As many as a dozen diocesan priests are expected to concelebrate.
In addition to those in law enforcement, the Catholic faithful and all people of good will are encouraged to support their police by remembering them in prayer, standing with them in worship and thanking them for all that they do to keep our communities safe. A live stream of the Mass will be made available on diocesan media for all those who cannot attend.
Coordinated by a committee of law enforcement representatives, among others, the diocesan-sponsored event is held to offer thanks to God for the dedication and sacrifice made by women and men in law enforcement as well as their families and communities. The Mass will include participation by law enforcement representatives who will read Scripture, offer petitions and lead the congregation in song. Bagpipers, fife and drum legions, color guard members and others will also be featured.
Luncheon will follow in the lower hall of the Cathedral. Luncheon tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at the event. Immediate family members of law enforcement attendees will be treated to a complimentary lunch. The Cathedral is located at 151 N. Warren Street, Trenton.
