Bishop’s Memorial Day message; Masses set at cemeteries; Green Ribbon School announced

May 24, 2019Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. has released a message for Memorial Day, reminding us of the importance of honoring those people who have lost their lives to protect our nation:
As a nation, different from Veterans’ Day, Memorial Day honors those brave women and men who proudly wore the uniform of our armed forces and made the ultimate sacrifices that have become the lifeblood of our republic. It is entirely fitting that we remember them with gratitude and pride.

In commemoration of Memorial Day, the two Catholic cemeteries sponsored by the Diocese of Trenton have planned Masses of Remembrance.
The Mass in Jesus Bread of Life Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum, 3055 Fostertown Road, Mount Laurel, will be held May 27 at 10 a.m. with Father Michael Dunn, parochial vicar of St. John Neumann Parish, Mount Laurel, and St. Isaac Jogues Parish, Marlton, presiding.

The Mass in St. Mary Cemetery and Mausoleum, 1200 Cedar Lane, Hamilton, will be held May 25 at 10 a.m. in Mausoleum Building A.

The U.S. Department of Education announced May 22 that St. Leo the Great School, Lincroft, has been recognized as a 2019 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School.
In offering her congratulations, JoAnn Tier, diocesan superintendent of Catholic schools, noted that St. Leo the Great School is the first Catholic school in New Jersey to receive the honor. “The forward-thinking initiatives and activities that qualified St. Leo the Great School for this award are comprehensive and impressive including the school’s nature courtyard,” Tier said.
According to the Green Ribbon School website, the aim of the program is to inspire students, staff and administrators to strive for 21st century excellence by highlighting promising practices and resources that all can enjoy. Outdoor, environmental and sustainability education helps all students engage in hands-on, authentic learning, hone critical thinking and collaboration skills, stay active and fit and develop a solid foundation in many disciplines.
