THE SOLEMN FEAST OF THE ASCENSION celebrated in the dioceses of New Jersey on the weekend of the 7th Sunday of Easter commemorates our belief that the Risen Lord Jesus, gathered with his disciples on Mount Tabor near Jerusalem, ascended body and soul into heaven, returning to his Father.
The Acts of the Apostles states: “... as they were looking on, he was lifted up and a cloud took him from their sight” (Acts 1:9).
The Gospel of Mark gives this account: “So then the Lord, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs” (Mark 16:19-20).
