Journey to the National Shrine

(Leaving Diocese for Washington, D.C., 7:00 am)

Morning Prayer

Leader:
God, come to my assistance.

All:
Lord, Make haste to help me.

Leader:
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

All:
As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever amen. Alleluia.

Psalmody

Ant.
We do well to sing to your name, Most High,
and proclaim your mercy at daybreak.

Psalm 92

Praise of God the creator
Sing in praise of Christ’s redeeming work (Saint Athanasius).

Side I
It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to make music to your name, O Most High,
to proclaim your love in the morning
and your truth in the watches of the night,
on the ten-stringed lyre and the lute,
with the murmuring sound of the harp.

Side II
Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad;
for the work of your hands, I shout with joy.
O Lord, how great are your works!
How deep are your designs!
The foolish man cannot know this
and the fool cannot understand.

Side I
Though the wicked spring up like grass
and all who do evil thrive:
they are doomed to be eternally destroyed.
But you, Lord, are eternally on high.
See how your enemies perish;
all doers of evil are scattered.

Side II
To me you give the wild-ox’s strength;
you anoint me with the purest oil.
My eyes looked in triumph on my foes;
my ears heard gladly of their fall.
The just will flourish like the palm-tree
and grow like a Lebanon cedar.

Side I
Planted in the house of the Lord,
they will flourish in the courts of our God,
still bearing fruit when they are old,
still full of sap, still green,
to proclaim that the Lord is just.
In him, my rock, there is no wrong.

All:
Glory to the † Father, and to the † Son, and to
the † Holy Spirit: † as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.

Psalm-Prayer

Take our shame away from us, Lord, and make us rejoice in your saving works. May all who have been chosen by your Son always abound in works of faith, hope and love in your service.

Ant.   We do well to sing to your name, Most High,
and proclaim your mercy at daybreak.

Ant. 2 I will create a new heart in you, and breathe into you a new spirit.

Recitation of the Rosary - Joyful Mysteries with reflections

  1. The Annunciation of Our Lord - But the angel said, “Do not fear, Mary, for God has looked kindly on you. You shall conceive and bear a son and you shall call him Jesus. He will be great and shall rightly be called Son of the Most High.”
  2. The Visitation - “You are most blessed among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that the Lord’s word would come true!”
  3. The Nativity of Jesus - Joseph too set out from Nazareth of Galilee. As he belonged to the family of David, being a descendant of his, he went to Judea to David’s town of Bethlehem to be registered with Mary, his wife, who was with child. They were in Bethlehem when the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in the manger, because there was no place for them in the [common] room.
  4. The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple - When the day came for the purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought the baby up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every first born male shall be consecrated to God. And they offered a sacrifice as ordered in the law of the Lord: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.
  5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple - On the first day of the journey they thought he was in the company and looked for him among their relatives and friends. As they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem searching for him, and after three days they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions.

Recitation of the Rosary - Sorrowful Mysteries with reflections

  1. The Agony in the Garden - Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over to pray." He went a little farther and fell to the ground, with his face touching the earth, and prayed, "Father, if it is possible, take his cup away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want."
  2. The Scourging at the Pillar - Pilate realized that he was getting nowhere and that instead there could be a riot. He then asked for water and washed his hands before the people, saying, "I am not responsible for his blood. It is your doing." All the people answered, "Let his blood be upon us and upon our children." Then Pilate set Barabbas free, but had Jesus scourged, and handed him over to be crucified.
  3. The Crowning with Thorns - They stripped him and dressed him in a purple military cloak. Then, twisting a crown of thorns, they forced it onto his head, and placed a reed in his right hand. They knelt before Jesus and mocked him, saying, "Long life to the King of the Jews!" They spat on him, took the reed from his hand and struck him on the head with it.
  4. The Carrying of the Cross - Then Pilate handed Jesus over to them to be crucified. They took charge of him. Bearing his own cross, Jesus went out of the city to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew: Golgotha. There he was crucified and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus was in the middle.
  5. The Crucifixion and Death - It was now about noon. The sun was hidden and darkness came over the whole land until mid-afternoon; and at that time the curtain of the Sanctuary was torn in two. Then Jesus gave a loud cry, "Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit." And saying that, he gave up his spirit.

ALL:
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.
Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord,
your grace into our hearts,
that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, your Son,
was made known by the message of an angel,
may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the
glory of His Resurrection.
Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Recitation of the Rosary - Luminous Mysteries

  1. The Baptism in the Jordan - At that time Jesus came from Nazareth, a town of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And the moment he came up out of the water, Heaven opened before him and he saw the Spirit coming down on him like a dove. And these words were heard from Heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved, the One I have chosen. . ."
  2. Jesus' Self-manifestation at the Wedding of Cana - "Everyone serves the best wine first and when people have drunk enough, he serves that which is ordinary. Instead you have kept the best wine until the end."
  3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God - He said, "The time has come; the kingdom of God is at hand. Change your ways and believe the Good News." As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." At once, they left their nets and followed him.
  4. The Transfiguration - And no sooner had he spoken than a cloud appeared and covered them; and the disciples were afraid as they entered the cloud. Then these words came from the cloud, "This is my Son, my Chosen one, listen to him." And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was there alone. The disciples kept this to themselves at the time, telling no one of anything they had seen.
  5. The Institution of the Eucharist - It was before the feast of the Passover. Jesus realized that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father, and as he had loved those who were his own in the world, he would love them with perfect love.
  6. At the end of the Luminous Mysteries, the choir will begin singing the Litany of Love; a Litany of all married saints. Vested deacons will process from the Great Church Sacristy and go to assigned Chapels. Married couples, their families, and engaged couples, please wait until the Litany has finished before moving to one of the following chapels.

Prayer for Married Couples

(Various Chapels in the Upper Church - 12:30 pm)

Father, all-powerful and ever-living God.
By the Sacrament of marriage, your grace unites man and woman in an unbreakable bond of love and peace.
You have designed the chaste love of husband and wife for the increase both of the human family and of your own family born in baptism.
You are the loving Father of the world of nature; you are the loving Father of the new creation of grace.
In Christian marriage you bring together the two orders of creation:
Nature’s gift of children enriches the world
And your grace enriches also your Church.
May those who are called to the vocation of marriage always be mindful of your love and presence in their lives.

Celebration of Penance

(Crypt Church - 1:30 pm)

An important element in making a pilgrimage is the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As pilgrims journey toward a holy place, the reality dawns in their awareness that life's true destination is heaven. The act of pilgrimage is an act of charity, penance, and renewal. In the Sacrament of Penance, all are renewed by the grace of reconciliation, which calls all to live lives of charitable service. Priests will be available to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance beginning at 1:30 in the Crypt Church.

Before you approach a priest for Confession, please spend some time in preparing to make a good confession. The following will aid you in your preparation.

Elements of Making a Sincere Confession

A thorough examination of conscience since your last confession is necessary.

Inform the priest of the approximate length of time since your last confession and your basic vocation in life (i.e. single, married, widowed, etc.), as this helps him place your confessional information in some context.

More serious, or mortal sins, are, as best as possible, to be named specifically and with some indication of their frequency. Less serious, or venial sins, ideally are mentioned specifically too, but may be mentioned more generally for the sake of brevity.

In order to receive the effects of absolution from sin, there needs to be a sincere desire to reject the sinful behaviors confessed and a willingness to respond to God's grace by attempting to avoid all future sin and occasions of sin.

Examination of Conscience (.pdf)

Act of Contrition

Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you.
I detest all of my sins because of your just punishments,
but most of all because they offend you, my God,
who are good and deserving of all my love.

I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace,
to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin.
Amen.

Eucharistic Liturgy

(Great Upper Church - 3:00 pm)

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading
(Proclaimed in Spanish)

Jeremiah 31:31-32a, 33-34a

I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers: the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from the land of Egypt. But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer will they have need to teach their friends and relatives how to know the Lord. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the Lord.

The word of the Lord.

All respond: Thanks be to God

Second Reading
(Proclaimed in Portguese)

Philippians 4: 4-9

Fill you mind with everything that is holy.

Brothers and sisters: Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!
Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.

The word of the Lord.

All respond: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia

Gospel
(Proclaimed in English)

John 2: 1-11

And the Mother of Jesus was there.

There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although they who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

The Gospel of the Lord.

All respond: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M.

Liturgy of the Eucharist

Departure for Home

(Depart for Home - 4:30 pm)

Evening Prayer

Leader:
God, come to my assistance.

All:
Lord, make haste to help me.

Leader:
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

All:
As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever amen. Alleluia.

Psalmody

Ant. 1 Like burning incense, Lord, let my prayer rise up to you.

Psalm 141:1-9

A prayer when in danger
An angel stood before the face of God, thurible in hand. The fragrant incense soaring aloft was the prayer of God’s people on earth (Revelation 8:4).

Side I
I have called to you, Lord; hasten to help me!
Hear my voice when I cry to you.
Let my prayer arise before you like incense,
the raising of my hands like an evening oblation.

Side II
Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth;
keep watch at the door of my lips!
Do not turn my heart to things that are wrong,
to evil deeds with men who are sinners.

Side I
Never allow me to share in their feasting.
If a good man strikes or reproves me it is kindness;
but let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head.
Let my prayer be ever against their malice.

Side II
Their princes were thrown down by the side of the rock:
then they understood that my words were kind.
As a millstone is shattered to pieces on the ground,
so their bones were strewn at the mouth of the grave.

Side I
To you, Lord God, my eyes are turned:
in you I take refuge; spare my soul!
From the trap they have laid for me keep me safe:
keep me from the snares of those who do evil.

All:
Glory to the † Father, and to the † Son, and to
the † Holy Spirit: † as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.

Psalm-Prayer

Lord, from the rising of the sun to its setting your name is worthy of all praise. Let our prayer come like incense before you. May the lifting up of our hands be as an evening sacrifice acceptable to you, Lord our God.

Ant.
Like burning incense, Lord, let my prayer rise up to you.

Ant. 2
You are my refuge, Lord; you are all that I desire in life.

Recitation of the Rosary - Glorious Mysteries with reflections

  1. The Resurrection of Our Lord - The Angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he is risen as he said. Come, see the place where they laid him."
  2. The Ascension into Heaven - Jesus led them almost as far as Bethany; then he lifted up his hands and blessed them. And as he blessed them, he withdrew (and was taken to heaven. They worshiped him). They returned to Jerusalem full of joy and were continually in the Temple praising God.
  3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit - When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. And suddenly out of the sky came a sound like a strong rushing wind and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. There appeared tongues as if of fire which parted and came to rest upon each one of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
  4. The Assumption of Mary - "I am the resurrection; whoever believes in me, though he die, shall live. Whoever is alive by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" Martha then answered, "Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world."
  5. The Coronation of Mary - A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
