Rooted in the Gospel invitation to share in the healing mission of Jesus Christ,
we advance the compassionate and competent spiritual, pastoral and sacramental care of God’s suffering people
by resourcing the clergy, pastoral ministers, healthcare professionals and caregivers who serve them.
We fulfill this mission in the following ways:
I. As Liaison to and between Healthcare Institutions, Medical Professionals, Chaplains and Clergy, we:
- advance the collaboration between chaplains, clergy, medical professionals and mental healthcare providers for the holistic health and well-being of Catholic patients
- provide extensive consultation and resources to chaplains, medical personnel and healthcare administrators in order that they be equipped to meet the unique religious needs of Catholic patients
- facilitate consistent and timely pastoral and sacramental care for Catholic patients by establishing and supporting schedules of priest coverage and by responding to urgent pastoral care requests
- collaborate with the Gennesaret Retreat team in the sacramental and spiritual care of the terminally ill
- engage youth and young adults as pastoral visitors in healthcare facilities through collaboration with high school and college campus ministries and parish youth ministry programs
- serve on boards and committees at both Catholic and non-Catholic hospitals, hospices and other healthcare facilities, to represent the Catholic voice and viewpoint in these settings
II. As Educators, Trainers and Formators of Pastoral Visitors of the Sick, we:
- administrate the 36-hour Certificate Program in Pastoral Care (CPPC)
- present 6-hours of Pastoral Care Training to first and second-year deacon candidates
- organize an annual large-scale collaborative Pastoral Care Conference
- coordinate an annual Pastoral Care Retreat Day for caregivers and others who minister to the sick
- promote major international and national initiatives, i.e.- World Day of the Sick, Pastoral Care Week, Family Caregivers Month and Healthcare Decisions Day to raise awareness and involvement
- lead Theological Reflection groups with and for pastoral care ministers
III. As Diocesan providers of Outreach and Services to Parishes, we:
- coordinate both the initiation and support of parish-based Pastoral Care ministries
- administrate, resource and support Faith Community Nursing ministries
- raise awareness of Family Caregiver needs and facilitate parish-based support for caregivers
- distribute pastoral care resources for parish use in bulletins, at liturgies and on their parish websites
- communicate current pastoral care resources via the diocesan website and extranet
- provide consultation and/or resources to parish clergy and staff on life-stage-transitions, healthcare facilities, illness, death and dying, advance directives, Catholic teachings and related issues
- publish Pastoral Presence newsletter to inform and affirm those in pastoral care
