Bishop George W. Ahr Fund

The Bishop George W. Ahr Fund was created to award grants for special projects that fulfill a spiritual need. Any church, office, apostolate, individual, institution, parish special ministry or organization is invited to apply for a grant.

The Bishop George W. Ahr Endowment Fund Committee selects from the pool of applicants who describe the amount needed with a detailed rationale for the request.

Msgr. Gregory D. Vaughan, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia, has announced the following grants to service agencies from the Bishop George W. Ahr Endowment Fund.

The following agencies and organizations were awarded grants in June 2004:

$1,000 Birthright of Freehold to continue the work of the Crisis Pregnancy Center by providing educational materials to local schools, advertisement of available services and baby care items to clients in need of assistance.

$690 Catholic Charities, School Social Services, to supplement services currently offered at Mount Carmel School, Asbury Park.
$1,000 Collier Services, Kateri Day Camp, to provide camperships for at-risk children.
$1,000 HABcore, Inc., Red Bank, to provide rent subsidies to those who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes.
$1,000 1st Way of Burlington County, to provide free pregnancy tests, maternity and baby clothing, food, formula and diapers to girls and women with unplanned pregnancies.
$370 LaSalle Provincialate, Lincroft, to purchase a video course on English as a Second Language, for use at parish ESL Centers in Neptune and Keyport.
$690 Mercy Center, Asbury Park, to provide rent subsidies for families in imminent danger of losing their housing.
$1,000 Mount Carmel Guild, Trenton, to assist the poor and needy to obtain necessary prescription medications.
$750 Garden State Correctional Facility, Yardville, for the purchase of textbooks, Bibles and supplemental materials for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process for inmates.
$1000 Project Paul, Keansburg, to purchase meat or poultry products for distribution to needy families of the area.
$1,000 St. Vincent De Paul Society, Mount Holly, to assist Spanish-speaking volunteers as they work among the Spanish-speaking poor of the diocese.
$500 Siena New Hope Home, New Monmouth, to provide a safe haven for children who are in emergency situations.

The application period for grants is Jan. 1 to April 15 each year.

Bishop George W. Ahr, who was Chief Shepherd of the diocese for 30 years, established the Bishop George W. Ahr Endowment Fund in 1975 with gifts he had received on the occasion of his 25th anniversary of episcopal ordination.
