The Diocese of Trenton is proud to present its inaugural Re-Image Film Festival, a day-long showcase of short films celebrating the human spirit. Set to take place in the historic Paramount Theater on the boardwalk in Asbury Park April 24, the day will feature a special presentation by John Crowley, whose family’s story was recounted in the recent, critically acclaimed film “Extraordinary Measures.”
The Re-Image Film Festival aims to support and encourage the next generation of visual storytellers; to explore the glory of creation, reveal the perseverance of humanity in challenging times, and uphold and defend the dignity of the human person.
The diocese issued a call in January for submissions of films and videos up to 20 minutes in length that support the festival’s stated mission. Participation is open to all faiths and places of residence and the deadline for entries was set for March 31 (extensions considered upon request).
The festival will feature screenings of selected films considered by the judges along with a series of special presentations throughout the day. Films will be judged according to three categories: Youth/High School; Young Adult/College and General. Cash awards will be presented for Best Picture, Mission Excellence and Viewers’ Choice. Doors will open at 10 a.m. Crowley will speak at 7 p.m. and Bishop John M. Smith will present the awards to the winners at 8 p.m.
In a recent letter of invitation, Bishop Smith writes, “The title of the festival reflects the mission. In stark contrast to the way that humanity is often reflected in our modern culture and media, this festival challenges artists to ‘Re-Image’ the human person in keeping with God’s own vision for us.”
The bishop added, “I think that the film festival has an essential message . . . particularly our youth and young adults who are continually bombarded with negative influences in the entertainment industry.”
Crowley’s story embodies the aim of the festival. Portrayed by actor Brendan Fraser in the film, Crowley, a member of St. Paul Parish, Princeton, is the biotechnology executive and entrepreneur who embarked on a courageous quest to develop treatment that would ultimately save the lives of his two youngest children from the ravages of a devastating genetic disease. The film also stars actor Harrison Ford as the pioneering but eccentric scientist who works with Crowley to find a treatment.
Crowley will share his real-life story of a father’s boundless love and how his family’s journey was adapted into the film. His talk, scheduled for 7 p.m., will also include a brief documentary on his family’s involvement in the film and a preview of a new book he has written on the experience.
Located just steps from the ocean on the boardwalk, the Paramount Theater offers an extraordinary movie-viewing experience, with a 40' cinema screen, crystal-clear HD projection and superior acoustics.
Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. A group rate of $3 per ticket for orders of 10 tickets is available. Each admission is valid for the entire day. Tickets can be purchased by calling (609) 406-7410, online at www.reimagefilmfestival.com, or at the Paramount Box Office on the day of the event.
The Re-Image Film Festival is being co-sponsored by the diocesan Offices of Youth and Young Adult Ministries; Radio and Television; Communications and Public Relations; Catechesis and the Campus Ministry of The College of New Jersey, Ewing.
