The phrase upon which the Pastoral Planning theme, Led By the Spirit was based comes from the U.S. Bishops' pastoral letter Go and Make Disciples (1992), "Jesus was led by the Spirit of God to a life of preaching and service, to the giving of himself in sacrifice ... we, bishops and Catholic people are led by this same spirit." The letter recalls how, from the time of his Baptism in the Jordan River, Jesus is led by the spirit into his mission and public miinistry. The selection of the theme by the Diocese of Trenton is an acknowlegement and acceptance that through the Baptism and Confirmation, we are led by the same spirit to contiunue the mission of Christ and to pour ourselves out in ministry to God's people.
The Led By the Spirit logo was designed by Monitor staffer Anthony Canamucio and portrays three primary images that serve to describe the overall mission of this new initiative.
The group of people depicted reflects the communal approach to Pastoral Planning, emphasizing that it is not about the vision or revelation of one individual who would make decisions in isolation. Rather, it is about a process that we all enter into together.
The road stretching out before them points to the focus on the future that is the cornerstone of Pastoral Planning. It offers a sense of moving forward and implies action, which are essential components if the Church is to respond effectively to the challenges of the Gospel in the midst of changing circumstances.
The prominent portrayal of the Holy Spirit places it in the role of initiator, the one who is planting within us the desire to respond to the future and inspiring in us the way to do that.
