Office of Catholic Schools - Philosophy

Catholic education faces new challenges and demands in the Third Millennium. In the recent document from the United States Bishops, Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium (2005), the Bishops remind us "that much has changed in our Church and our nation". (2005) The Bishops further draw our attention to the fact that Catholic education provides the catechesis as a way of "initiating the hearers into the fullness of Christian life" and is "intimately bound up with the whole of the Church's life". (p.2)

According to the Vatican II document The Declaration on Catholic Education, parents are the primary teachers of their children and must be recognized as mainly responsible for their children's education. Catholic education is a partnership between the parents and the school. In the Catholic family, children need to be taught to know and worship God and to love their neighbor. The Catholic principles taught in the home are re-enforced and expanded upon by the school. Catholic schools afford the best opportunity to realize the three-fold purpose of Catholic education - message, community, and service - among children and young people.

The interdependence of religious truth and values across the curriculum is demonstrated by the presence of administrators and teachers who express this interdependence in their personal and professional lives. We further believe that for a Catholic school to be viable it must be truly Catholic in faith, academically strong and financially solvent.
