Level II & III Catechist Certification

Levels II and III each consist of 20 hours of formation for a total of 40 hours. Sessions applicable to Levels II & III are offered by presenters who have earned a graduate degree in theology or a related field. These sessions can be found at diocesan Faith Enrichment Centers, parishes with qualified presenters, and Catholic colleges.

Catechists must complete a 2-hour formation session in each of the following Core topics:

-God and Revelation -Sacraments in General -Church History
-Old Testament -Sacraments of Initiation -Church/Ecclesiology
-New Testament -Sacraments of Healing -Morality
-Jesus -Sacraments of Commitment -Social Justice
-Prayer -Liturgy -Human Sexuality

And 10 hours of FOCUS learning to be selected by the candidate from within five areas:

  • Faith Development * (required)
  • Spirituality/Spiritual Development
    Four hours may be credited for personal or spiritual
    development activities.
  • Catechetical Ministry in the Church
  • Diocesan Guidelines on Sacraments, Curriculum, etc.
  • Specialized Methodology
    Two hours may be credited in the area of methodology for actual classroom experience, if the catechist has been formally observed and/or evaluated.
